About Alaska Adventure Logistics

2020 Safety Briefing led by Lead Guide Travis Elquist

A group of local Alaskan Freeride mountain bikers that decided to dream bigger on what was possible in their home state.

Cary Shiflea was born and raised in Palmer, AK. He got into DH biking around 2010 with The Alaska Downhill Brigade. As that project fizzled out he started The Alaska eBike Store in 2014 as a way to outfit his local riding group with industry discounts and add a new uphill shuttle tool to the quiver. For over a decade now, Cary has been on a mission to encourage more people to have fun riding bikes- from a simple city cruiser eBike ride to a Helicopter assisted freeride line and everything in between!

Travis Elquist has been a Helicopter Ski Guide in Valdez, AK for 15 years and a dedicated DH biker in Alaska for over a decade. Originally thinking that his DH days were done upon moving to Alaska, he realized it was just getting started once he connected with the tightknit crew of downhill riders building trails and shredding bikes around Southcentral Alaska.

Josh Benham is a local trail builder who developed and built the Hilltop Bike Park in Anchorage thru his company Pro Trails LLC. A lifelong biker who moved up to Alaska from Bellingham area. His knowledge of trail design and willingness to slap a berm smooth has helped the Alaskan MTB scene immensely.

Around 2018 when enough DH Riders and Builders had assembled, it was only natural to progress the sport in Alaska just a notch further with Helicopter Access. A single drop on a nearby summit using sling load and a R44 Helicopter was just a tiny glimpse into what lie ahead.(See Alaska Magazine Article Linked Here) Fast forward to 2020, a year for the history books that’s for sure, tourism in Alaska dropped to historic lows- bad for the economy but great for A-Star availability. July of 2020 a group of 15 friends set forth on the adventure of a lifetime. The stoke was high with first descents every run it was almost too much terrain to choose from. In July of 2022 the dream became a reality with the formation of Alaska Adventure Logistics Heli Biking tours. All of our guides are Wilderness First Responder Certified with a focus on Helicopter Access Biking.

About our Base of Operations: Located along the National Scenic Byway of the Glenn Highway, this stretch of roadway runs directly between the Chugach Mountains and Talkeetna Mountain Range. This provides a rugged up close look into the raw, natural forces that shaped the Alaskan Landscape. Our headquarters are situated at the choke point where the Talkeetna Mountains meet the Chugach at the Matanuska Glacier. The glacier functions as a weather hole that naturally propels warm valley air upward. Due to this phenomenon, visitors will often experience sunnier skies and a warmer environment compared to the rest of the Matanuska Valley, making this a premier destination for less weather delays.
